ESET Mobile Security

For some time I am searching and testing the free mobile security suits for Android to try and find out which one can protect best my smartphone. I have tested Norton Mobile Security, ESET and now I have Bitdefender. But Today I will talk about the ESET Mobile Security and not because I find it the best, but because has some features which I believe are important to be mentioned.

First I have to confirm that the product is still in beta version, so yes there are bugs to be solved from time to time. However I have the feeling this will be a great security software once the final complete application is released. The ESET Mobile Security comes with: an antivirus for removal of any unwanted or harmful programs which may affect your phone, an anti-spam for SMS/MMS/Voice which is working like a black list application, an anti-theft system based on SIM card registration and SMS commands for lock, wipe or locate, a security audit feature with built-in task manager to check which of the installed applications have access to your data, a password protection for modifications including uninstall and finally an update option for downloading the latest virus signatures.
The antivirus feature scans the entire phone and the micro-SD card for for worms, trojans, viruses, spyware, spam and other attacks. More than that the protection is a proactive one with heuristics technology which means that can detect an unknown virus at that moment by recognizing it as a threat. The anti-spam module is working as a black list application and all it does is to block any SMS, MMS or calls from certain contacts or from unknown numbers as customized by user.
The security audit feature is an interesting and useful one. It shows all applications installed with report for information accessed but also has a task manager to close these. Now for the time I have tested this, not all the applications were able to be closed. But after a while I realized that this was because some programs are re-opening, so the ESET task manager may be a realistic one. Another great feature of security audit is the fact that can show a warning message for the free space needed by the OS to run properly - I was not aware that 25 MB of free space or more are required for Android to run properly. Last good thing is that security audit has a battery life and Bluetooth monitor.
The update for new virus signature did not work for the time I tested it. It was always showing the message that all definitions are up-to-date. Users can lock the settings and removal of ESET Mobile Security with a password. And as I mentioned the removal part I believe some users will be happy to check the solution below (provided by ESET customer service) if they wish to uninstall:
1.Go to Settings - Location & Security and tap the Select Device Administrators option
2. Un-check the EMS box
3. Select deactivate and confirm with OK
4. You can now remove EMS from Manage Applications as normal.

ESET Mobile Security does not require too much space - about 2.5 to 3 MB - and also does not kill many of your phone`s resources. I will get back with future reviews for Android security products.

Lenovo IdeaPad P1

The third tablet announced by Lenovo the other days is made for home users mainly but comes with Windows 7 as operating system. And that`s not all. This combines a multi-touch screen with a stylus pen for maximum flexibility. So it`s some combination between the Android IdeaPad and ThinkPad.
Given the fact that P1 will ship with Microsoft Windows the hardware needs to be stronger - a 1.5 GHz processor from Intel, 16/32 GB internal storage (can be extended through the micro-SD card slot) and no official details regarding the RAM memory but should be around 2GB. The 10.1 inches screen will include a front web camera for chat and will display full flash support. In terms of connectivity there is Wi-Fi and USB. For software the IdeaPad P1 will have Microsoft Office for documents editing, Microsoft Security Essentials for protection and Lenovo App Manager to switch easy between business and personal profiles (plus other applications from Lenovo Shop).
The are no other details for IdeaPad P1 at this moment except the fact that will be available in Q4 this year.

Lenovo ThinkPad - Unboxed video

Lenovo ThinkPad

ThinkPad is another tablet announced Yesterday by Lenovo and is the business version of the IdeaPad K1 as has security software preloaded (with full device and SD encryption, anti-theft and disablement in case of stolen device). As you will notice below the technical specification are about the same with the other tablet made for home users:

-- DISPLAY:  TFT capacitive, multi-touch screen, HD 1280 x 800 pixels, 10.1  inches gorilla glass.
-- CPU:  nVidia Tegra T20 1 GHz dual-core processor.
-- MEMORY:  1 GB DDR2 RAM
-- STORAGE:  16/32/64 GB SSD flash for internal, SD card slot.
-- CAMERA:  Primary - front 2 MP.
Secondary - back 5 MP.
-- CONNECTIVITY: 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, 3.5 mm headphone jack, mini-HDMI, micro-USB, full USB.
-- SENSORS:  Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Compass, Proximity.
-- BATTERY:  up to 8 Hours.
-- OS:  Android Honeycomb 3.1, Adobe Flash.
-- APPLICATIONS:  Google Apps, SocialTouch, mSpot, Documents To Go, PrinterShare, Computrace Mobile, AccuWeather, McAfee Mobile Security, FlexT9, MyScript Notes Mobile, Citrix Receiver, eBuddy Messenger, ooVoo, PokeTALK, Zinio, Amazon Kindle, mSpot Movies, Netflix, mSpot Music, Slacker Radio, Amazon MP3, Andry Birds HD, Harwood Solitaire, Harwood Euchre, Harwood Hearts, Harwood Spades, Harwood Backgammon.

Not like the IdeaPad, the ThinkPad comes with 3G connectivity included. The same as Acer Iconia Tab, we will find a full USB port for keyboard, mouse etc. And another important detail is the optional pen - yes the screen is also touch-pen supported (just as the HTC Flyer has). So we might say that ThinkPad business tablet has all features you can wish for at this moment (the 2GB free cloud storage is available). The other accessories are not to be ignored - ThinkPad Tablet Keyboard Folio has a full keyboard integrated in a leather case with a small trackpad (like some netbooks have).

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 - Unboxed video

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 - Stay social video

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 - Product Tour video

Lenovo IdeaPad K1

Lenovo has announced Today three new tablets - two with Android Honeycomb operating system and one with Microsoft Windows 7. The first of Androids is IdeaPad K1 which, as you probably suspect correctly from the name, is made for entertainment, multimedia, home users. It is known that Lenovo`s laptops for home users are named as Idea and the ones for business start with Think. The K1 comes with Netflix video streaming application preloaded among other 40 applications.
The most important technical specification are:

-- DISPLAY:  TFT capacitive, multi-touch screen, HD 1280 x 800 pixels, 10.1  inches.
-- CPU:  nVidia Tegra T20 1 GHz dual-core processor.
-- MEMORY:  1 GB DDR2 RAM
-- STORAGE:  16/32/64 GB SSD flash for internal, microSD card slot up to 32GB.
-- CAMERA:  Primary - front 2 MP.
Secondary - back 5 MP.
-- CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, 3.5 mm headphone jack, mini-HDMI.
-- SENSORS:  Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Compass, Proximity.
-- BATTERY:  up to 10 Hours.
-- OS:  Android Honeycomb 3.1, Adobe Flash.
-- APPLICATIONS:  Google Apps, SocialTouch, mSpot, Slacker Radio, Amazon MP3, DrawingPad, Netflix, ArcSoft, Amazon Kindle, Zinio, eBuddy, ooVoo, PokeTALK, Documents To Go, PrinterShare, Connectify, Norton Mobile Security, AccuWeather, Galaxy on Fire 2, Vendetta Online, Need for Speed Shift, Andry Birds HD, Harwood Solitaire, Harwood Euchre, Harwood Hearts, Harwood Spades, Harwood Backgammon, Kongragate Arcade, Warships, Talking Tom Cat.

So I am thinking that Lenovo did not want to show just another Android tablet. This is why they loaded so many games and applications for music playing and download (including radio), painting and photo editing, watching, rent and edit videos (including TV shows), ebook reading (including magazines), social networking, messengers, video calls, documents editing and printing, data synchronizing and protection. Also the tablet offers cloud storage up to 2 GB for free which is not to ignore. The SocialTouch integrates Facebook, Twitter and email in one news feed place.
With so many applications the K1 promises a lot but all 40 apps will not have an important impact regarding the price - you can buy it now on web for 499 USD.

Motorola XT316

Motorola has made public their new XT316 smartphone which is a QWERTY keyboard and touch screen Android. They say is fashion, fun, functional and budget friendly. I agree with all except the fashion part as the design makes me think of people who are working in construction field or engineers. The most important technical details are:

-- DISPLAY: 2.8 inches QVGA capacitive multitouch, 16M colors
-- CPU:  ARM 11 600 MHz.
-- GPU:  Adreno 200.
-- MEMORY:  256 MB RAM.
-- STORAGE:  521 MB for ROM, microSD card slot up to 32GB.
-- CAMERA:  3MP.
-- CONNECTIVITY:  3G, HSDPA, HSUPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, micro-USB port, 3.5 mm headphone jack, A-GPS.
-- SENSORS:  Accelerometer, Proximity, Digital Compass.
-- MULTIMEDIA:  QWERTY keyboard.
-- BATTERY:  Li-Po 1420 mAh.
-- OS:  Android 2.2 Froyo upgradable to Gingerbread.
-- APPLICATIONS:  Google apps, social networking.

The announcement mentions an amazing battery life with performance of 27 days for stand-by - that is if it`s a reality. The XT316 is a main competitor for those other QWERTY smartphones from BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung and HTC. Of course is great for users who like touch screen devices but prefer a physical keyboard to type quickly and simple.

Evolio Neura

Evolio - a Romanian telecom and GPS devices producer - has announced a new tablet which appears to be a main competitor for the iPad 2 on the local market. The most important technical specifications are:

-- DISPLAY:  TFT capacitive, multi-touch screen, WXGA 1280 x 800 pixels, 9.7  inches.
-- CPU:  nVidia Tegra 2 1 GHz dual-core processor.
-- MEMORY:  1 GB DDR2 RAM
-- STORAGE:  16 GB SSD flash for internal, microSD card slot up to 32GB.
-- CAMERA:  Primary - front 1.3 MP.
-- CONNECTIVITY: 3G HSPA+ and/or Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, A-GPS, 3.5 mm headphone jack, LAN, HDMI.
-- SENSORS:  Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Compass, Proximity.
-- BATTERY:  unknown.
-- OS:  Android Froyo 2.2 upgradable to Honeycomb 3.0, Adobe Flash.
-- APPLICATIONS:  Google Apps, Social apps.

It`s clear that this has the latest hardware for Android Honeycomb so I do not understand why is not shipping with this OS version. The great thing about this tablet is the fact that has all connectivity options in the world including a LAN port - I have not seen this so far on a tablet.
As the Evolio mentions this should be an iPad 2 killer. I am not sure about that but I am proud that is made in Romania, is looking nice and has a good price - about 500 USD for the Wi-Fi version (iPad 2 in Romania is starting from about 700 USD) and about 600 with 3G included.

-- MEMORY:  512 MB RAM.
-- STORAGE:  16 GB for internal, microSD card slot up to 32GB.
-- CAMERA:  8 MP camera, LED, video recording up to 1080p.
Secondary - VGA, video chat, video calling.
-- CONNECTIVITY:  3G/4G, HSDPA, HSUPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, micro-USB, HDMI, DLNA, OTA, 3.5 mm headphone jack, A-GPS.

The phone is business dedicated, and not just with the QWERTY keyboard, but has encryption capabilities for internal memory and for SD card and virtual meetings application from Cisco. It seems to be an ATRIX with physical keyboard.
